Bio"His name was Roger, an Oppidan who had been at Eton since age six - "Eton blood" they called a lifer. As he was most often jolly, James was soon to annoit him with the name "Jolly Roger," the one and only true friend there ever was to be in his lonely ascent to the top." p7
"Jolly R, who had delayed carrying out James' orders, suddenly found the courage he needed. He marched up to the rattled helmsman at the wheel and saluted politely. "You heard the Captain. We're abandoning ship. Right, I'll take over. Go on. Be quick."
The helmsman needed no further convincing. He gladly turned the wheel over to the round lad and hurried away. Way beyond any rational sense of danger or basic survival instinct, Jolly was in a state of complete euphoria as he stood before the vacated wheel. First his right hand firmed around the wooden peg on the wheel to starboard, then his left curled around the grip to the port side. He could feel the tension of the wind filling the sails, singing through the array of ropes and rigging wound and tied and all converging on the wheel tugging at his hands. Before him the deck and masts heeled and bobbed at the motion of the wind. Beyong the bowsprit, the river Thames, and beyond the river...the sea was waiting.
